Bonding may be recommended if a tooth has been darkened, discolored, or damaged. Bonding is the latest procedure in cosmetic dentistry and several techniques are available. One technique involves slightly reducing the discolored tooth on the front side to prevent the bonding addition from being too bulky in contour. Then the tooth is acid etched, washed, and dried. Then a type of tooth-colored material is used for placement over the natural tooth. Bonding a tooth can normally be done in one dental visit. Bonded teeth can last up to five years before they need to be redone. Another bonding technique incorporates the use of porcelain veneers. The tooth is reduced to avoid bulkiness when the veneer is placed on its surface. The laminated veneer is contoured to fit properly over the reduced tooth and then cemented into place using an adhesive. Veneers usually last longer than traditional bonding.
