Hints from Heloise
-Viewers notice you at open and remember the close. Think of first and last.
What will you say to open – “I am here because…” And how to end the segment. Shelly will finish the segment by giving out your website, phone number, etc. if appropriate.
-Be prepared for them to take a "bump" or tease shot before the show starts. You will need to be ready (hair, make-up, clothes) before the show starts. And be doing something - chopping food, stirring, or putting something together.
-How long is your segment going to be. You need to think about what you want to say, and keep it short or long depending on the time. Remember that the show is always changing. Depending on weather and breaking news, segments may be shortened or cut.
-If bringing props or things to show, think about how to show or use them. What order will they be on the table, make it logical. Try to make your explanation descriptive and short if possible.
-Clothes-- Small prints/flowers tend to "buzz" on camera. Look at the show set to know the colors. It's very "earth tones" so if you wear all brown or beige you will blend in! Most professional say no bright white.
-They have a nice GREEN ROOM with make-up counter and lights. (But there are no hair or make-up people at the station. You must do this yourself.)
-Authors can send a copy of the book and contact information in advance of the segment. But also bring a copy of the book the day of the segment for the cameras.
-Is there anything "visual" associated with your book/story/cause/event that you can bring. It's T.V.! (Just radio with picture)
-Be yourself, know your topic and talk with Shelly like the cameras are not there.
-Shelly is a pro and will guide you ... HAVE FUN!
