SAN ANTONIO – It was a special day for a little girl. Spurs legend David Robinson told Annie Villarreal she won the grand prize in the Texas Cavaliers River Parade children's art contest.

When asked how it feels to win, the second grader simply replied, “Amazing.”

Annie will get to ride in the river parade as the guest of honor on Monday, April 19. David Robinson is this year's Grand Marshal.

School children from all across the area competed in the contest. For the eighth consecutive year, the Texas Cavaliers called on Bexar County and San Antonio’s public elementary school students to illustrate the River Parade theme, which for 2010 is “River of Dreams”.

A winner was chosen from each of the ten City Council districts and one from Bexar County, and then Annie was chosen as the grand prize winner. In addition to having their artwork featured in the River Parade Commemorative Program, each finalist received $1,000 from the Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation to enable his/her school to purchase art supplies.

Annie's grand prize winning art will be featured on the cover of the commemorative program.

“The judges are continually amazed by San Antonio’s incredibly talented elementary students,” said De Miller, River Parade Marshal. “The art contest gives the students an opportunity to showcase their talents while at the same time providing them with a fun time participating in one of the city’s great Fiesta events.”

News 4 WOAI Chief Meteorologist Jennifer Broome was one of this year’s art contest judges.

The Texas Cavaliers’ River Parade kicks off at 7 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2010. For tickets call 22-RIVER or visit texascavaliers.org.
