½ C cream or milk
1 tspn vanilla
½ tspn ground cinnamon
1 orange, zested & juice from half
4-8 slices Panettone or other bread
4 tbspns mascarpone (or cream cheese) at room temperature
½ C orange marmalade or other jam
4 tbspns butter
Syrup and powdered sugar for garnish
In a shallow bowl, whisk the eggs, cream, vanilla, cinnamon, orange zest and juice.
Spread some of the mascarpone over half of the Panettone slices. Then top with some marmalade. Place a slice of Panettone over the filling.
Place the stuffed sandwiches in the egg mixture and turn over to coat both sides.
Heat the butter in a sauté pan and cook the sandwiches until golden on both sides.
Place in a 250-degree oven to keep warm while cooking the rest.
To make “French” French Toast: Substitute crème fraiche or cream cheese for the mascarpone and use strawberry jam or other jams.
To make “Southern” French Toast: Use Apple Butter & Pecans as the filling.
