SAN ANTONIO - For many of us, our New Years resolution was to get healthier and lose weight. So, San Antonians, how is that going for you? Have you succeeded in becoming healthier? Or, has that goal gone astray due to distractions and lack of motivation? Our dietitian, Heather King, joined us this morning with tips on how to meet those weight-loss goals and succeed in becoming healthier.
Her first tip is to skip perfection. Heather says that you won't lose a bunch of weight in a hurry. The important thing is that even if you lapse, this does not mean that it should become a relapse. Stay focused!
Tip number two is to stop making excuses. We know you are busy, so be sure to avoid and resist those junk food cravings that you might have during the day. Remember, it is OK to treat yourself once in a while, but not all the time.
The third tip is to set realistic goals. Don't set yourself up for defeat right from the go. Set a simple goal of losing about five pounds a month - a very realistic goal - which in total would result in 60 pounds for the year! It takes time to lose a significant amount of weight the healthy way.
Tip number four is to recruit for your team. Your team will help you achieve your goals. For example, your family, friends or co-workers will all help you gain motivation to be healthy. Even if their goal isn't losing weight, the fact that they will be there to encourage is a huge step in itself.
Finally, Heather says to limit exposure to high risk/unhealthy foods. When you go out with friends, think ahead to making a healthy choice when ordering drinks or food. If your friends are all ordering fried foods, will you have the self control to resist and order a salad? If you do decide to eat junk food or unhealthy foods, be sure to limit yourself and eat small portions.
