SAN ANTONIO – The Fab Five captured Olympic gold and the hearts of the world at the Summer Olympics in London.
This year’s women’s gymnastics team is just the second in history to win the team competition, and their inspirational journey continues right here to the Alamo City.
They’re performing Friday night at the AT&T Center with the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions.
Jordyn Wieber sat down with News 4 to talk about the performance.
She’s poised, elegant and graceful. Wieber propelled herself to the world stage, but if you ask her, it’s still just a little girl’s dream on a balance beam.
"Gymnastics is my whole world,” she says. “It's all I've know since I started when I was four years old."
And at 17, she’s now and forever an Olympic champion.
Wieber says she keeps her gold medal in a secret spot in her bedroom.
As her spotlight grows, she’s thrown out the first pitch at a Detroit Tigers game, and even Justin Bieber has Wieber Fever, sending her a congratulatory tweet.
"I'm a big fan of his,” Wieber says. “I used to be really obsessed with him. It would be an honor to meet him someday."
McKayla was not impressed – just kidding! While we’re on the subject, don’t ask Wieber to do the pose.
"I usually decline because that's her trademark,” she says. “I don't want to take that from her."
Maybe the one part of her life that hasn’t changed is that special bond with the sport and her fellow gymnasts.
"It can get a little overwhelming but we're all in this together,” Wieber says.
The Fab Five are reunited, touring the country with the Kellogg’s Tour.
"All the Olympic teams from the men’s, women’s, rhythmic, and trampoline teams,” Wieber says.
From the music to the lights, it’s a total 180 from the competitive grind.
"You don't have judges sitting there, critiquing you,” Wieber says. “You just want to put on a good show for everyone."
Especially for a new generation of little girls on balance beams with the same big dreams.
"They always ask for advice,” Wieber says. “What happens if you have a tough day and you think you want to quit? We just tell them to keep persevering through the hard times. Keep working hard and keep that passion inside you for the sport."
