SAN ANTONIO - Angelica Estrada is a 16-year-old girl whose life was turned around three years ago when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. For quite a while she lived in and out of the hospital and required many blood transfusions to keep her stable. One year of chemotherapy took a toll on her body, but the blood donations kept her going.
Monica Mendez from South Texas Blood & Tissue Center said one blood donation could save up to three lives.
“The donors don’t know that one day they could be saving their own kid’s life - or their own,” said Estrada.
The brain tumor greatly affected Angelica’s nervous system, but within a couple of years she went from being in a wheelchair, to a walker, and now she is able stand without the walker on some days. She thanks the generous blood donors for her progression.
You can help people like Angelica by donating blood. To donate, you only have to be 16 years old with a signed parental consent form and weigh 120 pounds. If you are 17 years old, you must be healthy, weigh 110 pounds and have an ID.
