SAN ANTONIO - For many, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is about remembering people who have passed and celebrating their lives. San Antonio Living art guru Trina Bacon showed us one way to honor our loved ones on this special day which has been celebrated for hundreds of years.
One way to honor them is by making an altar. This special craft can be customized to fit the description of that unique individual. For example, you can put their pictures, their favorite candy or drink, colorful table covers and candles on the altar.
Another popular item for the Dia de los Muertos altars is "pan de muerto." These sweet breads are a recurring theme because they are said to attract the souls of the dead.
And of course, we can never forget the skull decorations! These can be colored as bright as you'd like to help decorate your altar with more color while enriching the theme of the holiday at the same time.
These crafty altars can be made wherever you'd like. Take a look at Shelly's altar that she made with Trina - it is very simple! This is a great tradition to teach your kids how to honor people of the past, especially those they love!
