VIA makes case for a $35-million Transit Station

We told you recently about the new bus stops VIA is building for $300,000 apiece, to go with their new rapid transit buses that cost almost $900,000 each. Now VIA is moving ahead with an even more ambitious part of that project. The agency hopes to turn a neglected section of the west side into San Antonio’s “Grand Central Station”.

This project along with the tourist centered streetcar project is but another boondoggle supported by the county Judge and the city in return for favors from the developers and others in the area. San Antonio needs so much more than to pour millions into projects such as this and the incredibly expensive "shelters." Don't any of them realize we are having problems with the economy already? If this is a "must have" then why not ask the adjacent property owners to pay the tab? Then stop wasting our money.

all it will be is a sign board for the taggers of this city or a lot of cameras watching your every move. and this place will be a magnet for the homeless that stay only about 2000 feet away to the north. yes folks the new transit center is going in at the old cattlemans square area between Frio street and the county jail and west martin and west commerce streets. the city promised us that the homeless center would be great place but if you drive on west martin street between Frio and the RR tracks all you see is the trash and all the empty beer bottles and the homeless walking up to your car looking for money as you waite for the street light to change.

If the city were to initiate an ambitious program to time street lights, and pave roads I would be excited. This is not progress, this is theft. Someone once said you can steal more with a briefcase, pen and pencil than you can steal with a shotgun and a .357 revolver. They were right. The developers along this route are the ones pushing this "infrastructure and improvement" They appear to be buying influence with tequila, as only a drunk would sign off on this project. The fact that less than five percent voted for the bond project earlier this month allows this theft. Any and all politicians who vote for light rail, street cars, or tolling existing roads need to be prosecuted and voted out of office, a sthis is blatant theft. If you did not vote in last month's bond issue, you should not say anything, as you are part of the problem.

Let's see . . . we built one transit center (the Eastside Transit Center) and it doesn't get used, so let's build another, more expensive, and give it a different type of name - a multi-modal transit center. They both have rail, they both have buses, and taxis can be had if anyone used the center. The hype today is we can bring people from the East side Center (if they can find any), and people from the yet-to-be created Westside Center, and mix them. How, you ask? Well, mostly by routing all buses out of downtown and making them end their inbound runs at either the Eastside or Westside transit center. Need to make a connection? Well, then, either it's a long walk, take a taxi or pay another fair to VIA for a ticket across downtown on the not yet constructed and wholly unnecessary light rail . . . er, pardon me, Judge Wolff, streetcar system. All this talk of high-speed rail (really, JimCrackCorns, what have you been smoking?) traveling at 115 to 125 mph with 5 stops between here and Austin when would a train have sufficient distance to either reach that speed or enough distance to stop at any of the numerous street-grade crossings? This hype is pure, unadulterated BS that is being spread on an uninterested public that will become another financial sinkhole like the Alamodome, another VIA project and blast from the past. As for a gathering place, is Main Plaza really a gathering place? Since they destroyed all the shade trees most people leave Main Plaza alone and seek shade elsewhere. With no parking at either the East or West side terminals how is anyone going to use the train? Will they take the bus from the suburbs to get to the terminal to catch a train? Heck, even the people who work at VIA's main office don't take the bus to work? Don't believe me? Check the parking lot on San Pedro and look at the reserved parking places for VIA Administration. If mass transit is such a good idea, why is it shunned by the people spending the tax $$$$?

Even though i been paying taxes for the last forty years I can't even get a sidewalk and driveway at my house. But via can make a case for 35 million dlls for another monument funded by taxpayers.

Finally the city moves towards the future - the only real problem is population density and access. You have to drive to get there which defeats the point. Nonetheless, I have to wonder where the rail is going. Wer need light rail, but we also need commuter rail from here to DFW - a trip to Austin should run @ 75 minutes, with 5 minute stops in Selma, New Braunfels, San Marcos, and Buda along the way and top speeds @ 115-125mph.

I better not have any one asking for even a tic up on taxes we pay now. I know we have to move with progress but, but, but..... Where they are putting that now will mean I will not be using it because of the area it is located in. I don't need any more threats to me and mine. You will have to wear a bullet proof suit of armour to even feel a little safe there!
