Times ARE tough. You want cheap labor, then be prepared to hold a fire extinguisher when the time comes. I don't think I'd let 14G walk out without some sort of collateral though. Remember, these homies are street smart. Beat them at their own game. You want a hustler doing your work, then learn the hustle game before getting involved. If you go hard on'em then they will either decline to do the work (you've lost nothing) or they'll get paid. In the end you'll wanna know homies facts so you know where to find his sorry ass when your house burns down.

Always go with established companies who have a good BBB track record. It seems like anyone in this town with a rusty old pickup and a few tools is a contractor. At least go with an actual company that has pockets deep enough so you can sue them if they screw up and don't fix it.

I wonder if these are the same bright individuals DR Horton hired to work on our neighborhood because after we began changing light fixtures we noticed we were far from being within National Code. Thank God nothing had happened until this point, but honestly if you're going to work without the proper licensing at LEAST somehow learn the job well so your genius workmanship doesn't give you away!
