SAN ANTONIO -We're still getting emails from some of you who've received CPS Energy bills that are double, or triple what you are used to seeing. We investigated this for you last week, but now we have more information on what caused that expensive spike in your power bills. News 4 Trouble Shooter Jaie Avila has an update.

Imagine you go to the grocery store and buy $100 worth of food, but they only charge you $50 for it.
On the next shopping trip, they realize the mistake, and charge you $50 extra on that bill. CPS Energy says that's what happened to some customers because of miscalculated energy usage in December.

“That's exactly what they led me to believe, that I was undercharged the month before and to make up the losses that's why I got such a huge bill,” said Brad Radick, a CPS Energy customer. Radick had a slightly lower than usual bill in December, then the very next month, a shocker.

“It went from $66 up to $177,” Radick said.

Like other customers who received huge January bills, Radick had to pay extra that month because the December bill was too low. But why did that happen to so many people?

CPS Energy now tells us that back in November it had a contract dispute with its meter readers. The contract was terminated and those meter readers were off the job, so they had a manpower shortage, and couldn't read as many meters as they usually do. More customers had their energy consumption estimated based on previous months' usage.

CPS Energy claims whenever it has to estimate usage, it tends to underestimate consumption so as to not overcharge the customer. In December they underestimated by so much, the January adjustments resulted in bills that were double or triple the usual amount.

CPS told us some of those January bills might even include charges from November as well.

However, some of the customers who complained to us didn't have estimated bills. The meter was just read incorrectly. CPS Energy is correcting those bad readings for customers who call.

CPS Energy says it reached agreement with its meter readers on Friday. So it doesn't expect anymore wild fluctuations with the February bills.

From SATXDEVILDOG:It's still happening. Just paid the Feb. bill and it was almost double any of the 12 previous months. I called to inquire about a mistake or broken meter. They had me give them the reading over the phone and said the reading was right and didn't even offer to test it. SAD SERVICE! BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE! After all Channel 4 reported on these guys before for their upper management having over priced dinners and other unjustified expences. How do you think they pay for that? ...US!

Thank you CPS for continuing to bend over hard working citizens and really going to town on us. When i bring my tricks from prostituting to pay off the electricity bill, I'll remember to turn out the lights. I'm curious, since there really isn't anything us citizens can do, how much further do you all think that CPS can get away with this? I mean we all know that they've been in money scandals before but its getting a little much. No?

CPS must stand for Crap Public Service! Some how my November and December usage calculation came in around 928 kWh with the October calculation slightly higher. My current bill is telling me my household used 2218 kWh for the month. Not only is that double what we've used in the past 3 months, it's more than we used at our highest peak in the summer!!!

I’ve lived in apartments since moving to SA nearly 4 years ago. As a result, I had no frame of reference as to how much I was actually paying. My last bill, even though I used fewer Kwh, was more expensive, about $95 for a 1-bedroom apartment in a month where I didn’t run the heat or AC. After speaking with some coworkers, each owning a 3-bedroom house, I learned that I always pay more than they do! How is this possible? Why am I paying more for an 850sq ft, 1-bedroom apartment, then they’re paying for homes twice the size and with multiple family members? Someone told me it’s how apartments break down the energy usage and divide it equally amongst the tenants in each apartment block. Is this even legal? If I forgo energy usage as a means of lowering my bill while others go to town and use their Ac or heat, I’m getting screwed.

They installed one of the electronic meters about 10 years ago. They drive by and read it from their car with some sort of device. Guess they got tired of jumping the wall into my backyard 'cause I always keep the gates locked. By the way, I also had one of those in the early 1990s at my other house in San Antonio. Guess some people are still behind...way behind. :)

One thing I notice is the lack of information concerning the UNION! These meter readers are unionized, so for those of you who are saying CPS could just hire more of them don't understand Unions.
