SAN ANTONIO - Roaches – and rodents. It’s something you never want to hear about at a local restaurant. But for some reason, they’re popping up everywhere.
There were so many alarming health department reports this time around, that we won’t be handing out a Blue Plate Award. Instead, this week, the News 4 WOAI Trouble Shooters are exposing all the dirty details at three local eateries.
The News 4 WOAI Kitchen Cops first stop was the popular China Sea buffet off I-10 at Wurzbach. The health department visited the Chinese buffet after a customer complained about seeing a mouse crawling on food trays.
“It’s a kid’s toy,” China Sea Manager Stanley Chi said when News 4 Trouble shooter Mireya Villarreal asked him about the incident.
We first told you about China Sea back in March when they were shut down by the San Antonio Metropolitan Health Department. Their license was suspended until they cleaned up the roaches, flies, and rodent droppings.
This time around, things weren’t any different.
We asked him about the health inspector’s new findings of roaches and roach eggs in the restaurant and Chi responded, “Yeah, two eggs.”
Stanley wouldn’t let us check out his kitchen, but he did say things were better.
“Every time we do something wrong, we fix it,” he said. “It is right now.”
Moving on, we went to Alamo Heights, where a complaint was filed against a popular restaurant on Broadway, called Viet-Nam.
“Last time we had a problem, we sprayed it. The company, the medicine affect them and they come out. Next day they come out,” said Quan Tang, an employee of the restaurant.
The health inspector found live and dead roaches at the time of inspection. She suggested better pest control.
“Last week we had the smoke, the fogging. Last week, the whole restaurant closed for one day,” said Tang in response.
Viet-Nam has hired a new pest control company, and will be reinspected soon.
Our last stop was the Pig Stand off Broadway, near downtown. This inspection was also triggered by a customer complaint.
“You know, it was so dry and then we had the rain. It happens. We live in Texas,” said the Pig Stand owner.
The inspector found roaches at the 24-hour eatery.
The owner confirmed the statement saying, “Like the health inspector said, it wasn’t infested. She just found a few that she found.”
Again, we asked to see the improvements, but weren’t allowed past the counter.
The Pig Stand’s owner says they are working on a few more problems, but it should be all cleaned up by the time the inspector comes back.
No Blue Plate handed out this week, but there were a number of restaurants that had zero demerits on their last health inspection.
