Going green comes with a hefty price tag

When you're using tax-payer dollars to make such a big purchase, it's easy to ask - Why not just buy the cheapest car out there? City leaders do admit it is more expensive to buy a hybrid; but in long run, they claim, it's worth it.

They'd save a ton more with mopeds. And have about the same haul capacity...

This actually comes out to less than 22400.00 per vehicle. depending on how long the vehicles are in service there is a tremendous savings. The detectives for the police department drive hybrids as well as some of the code compliance people. The savings in fuel as well as the value of the vehicles once they are sold will pay for themselves. You get twice the mileage you get in a regular vehicle, plus the resale value. This appears to be a win for the city for once, which will offset the Christmas tree light boondoggle.

No to mention renaming Durango. I looked at hybrids once, both the toyota suv and the Ford Escape - both time I was told the fuel savings goes out the window (pardon the expression) when you have to run the AC. People do that a lot down in here in south TX. I'm not sure why SA needs a fleet of this many cars - maybe they should just pay the employees mileage for using their own vehicles. They've saved $160K in fuel - but how much extra did they spend. My daughter has a Ford Focus - gets around 33mpg city - is that not good enough.

Well why not? $600+K for so called energy efficient vehicles and $500+K for LED xmas lights. It's only money and there's plenty more where that came from - right?
