Charitable Bingo doesn't always benefit charities

Charitable Bingo is big business in Texas. We're talking more than $700 million made in just one year. This type of gaming is allowed because some of that money is supposed to go to charities. But News 4 WOAI Trouble Shooter Mireya Villarreal uncovered, thanks to almost no oversight by the state, very little of that money makes it to the non-profits.

There really wasn’t any reputable Lessor/Management Team you could have interviewed. Jamal Tawil? The Lottery Commission, the State Attorney General and our Bexar County District Attorney is fully aware he is an EMBEZZLER! That is known fact. Still I applaud your efforts. Sincerely, Beatrice Castilleja Bebe4sa@aol.com

If the Garcia family has nothing to hide, why not open your books to the public?

I hope that you are going to look at the full picture of where the money is going and I say that because last nights story did not explain how much money is taking off the top on a quarterly bases from the lottery takeing their cut from the chartities and this for the whole state of Texas not just bexar county. So where is that money going?

I Play ALOT of BINGO$$$ and I have seen Owners of the Hall come in wearing tons of Jewelry and designer clothes and driving very NICE cars, maybe they come from wealth but now reading this, things seem pretty fishy! About Jose Menendez, he is a GREAT guy and you watch how things will CHANGE!!!

When your expenses are so high, any company would not be able to stay in business. These companies are over exagerating their expenses to account for the low amount of money the charities are getting. They've found a way around the laws and are pocketing huge profits. Scam artists at their best!

Am I the only one confused by this story? It implies that these bingo hall operators are stealing money intended for charities, but then talks about "expenses" being so high there isn't any money to be dispersed to the charities... so which is it?

Jamal Tawil is the best operator in the state and the charities under his wing have no complaints what so ever and do very well, just ask them. There are a few bad apples but there always is not the norm in San Antonio. It is a little funny that WOAI is attacking Bingo's right at a time when Retama Race track is making changes and no doubt pushing for casinos. What charities do the race tracks support?? You will find that they are owned by out of state interests and not a single charity benefits from Race Tracks in Texas much less casinos. Why doesn't WOAI investigate that.

Jose Menendez is a typical all-talk, do-nothing politician..he is obviously shocked..SHOCKED that a state-directed operation run for the benefit of charities is not running above board - and in fact, in many cases ripping off the very charities they are supposed to help.. overseen by a committee on which he sits...somebody, or most likely a bunch of somebodies, - including a few politicians - are surely lining their pockets at the charities' expense - no pun intended. What a bunch of scumbags...
