Car seats in shopping carts become a dangerous combination

If you are a parent, chances are you've done this: to make grocery shopping easier with baby, you take your infant car seat out of the car, and snap it on top of the shopping cart.

This is why carriers are so great! And you CAN use them for toddlers, too! Don't get a Bjorn or Snugli, they won't last long, and aren't very comfy for parents OR babies. But a good carrier, like Babyhawk, Boba, Beco, Ergo, Kinderpack, Maya Wrap ring slings, or woven wraps, will let you carry your child comfortably until they are 40 lbs. I'm a single mom, and have never put a car seat on the shopping cart. It just scares me, plus I prefer to have my babies close to me! I see babies crying, or with bottles propped, all the time at the stores. My babes are held, happy, and can nurse while we shop if needed!

For those that are so quick to call stupid I'd like to point out that the infant seat we used for our son in 2003 advertised the ability to place the seat on a cart. It latched front and back, we only knew what we had seen and heard as first time parents. Having our daughter in 2010 was a different story. We used a seat from 2008 that in no way fit on any of the carts we ever came across. Naturally we put that infant seat into the back of the cart or took the stroller with us. Guidelines and rules change constantly in regards to infant/toddler items and as unfortunate as it is, the way we find out something is a bad idea is for it to go wrong. How many of us had drop side cribs to dispose of in the last few years? Would anyone call stupid over that prior to the recall? I doubt it.

Good Info. I see people doing this all the time. I have always thought it was a bad idea. Its sad that we have to make people aware of things that should be common sense. Unfortunately the average parent has no common sense. If they do, they dont care enough to take the extra precautions necessary to keep their children safe. After all it seems to be all about convenience these days. For all the people bashing each other on this forum you have way too much time on your hands and obviously nothing better to do. You are a classy bunch. I just hope none of you have children of your own. If you do I feel sorry for them.

I saw people doing that at the store and thought it was weird. It looked like a good idea but I didn't trust it. I put my cat seat inside the BASKET part of the shopping cart. True, there wasn't much room for my groceries but it worked just fine. Only thing about it (like all strollers etc) is the baby is in front of you, so when you cross a street they cross first. Something I never like but unless you wear a harness it isn't something easily changed :/

one more thing too. its just a matter of time until the stores that all of us shop at will stop allowing car seats on shopping carts (which would be a good thing)because some "genuis" will probably get a sleezy lawyer and sue one of these department or grocery stores becasue they weren't informed that its not safe to place car seats on the shopping cart when this happens to them. You know they'll get money or something because that what the world has come to. How does a toddler "jostle" a shopping cart that is heavier than him. Those shopping carts at Sam's are heavier then what you find at grocery stores like HEB.

Bottom line is PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILDREN!!!!!I see it all the time in stores were parents don't pay attention to their "little angels" and something bad happens about 50% of the time. They let their kids run around the store like its a playground. This isn't on the West or South Sides that I see this. This happens on NW side of town. Its unfortunate that this baby was hurt but come on you should of already had enough practice with the first child. My wife and I make sure our son is safe because there is always one of us watching him like a hawk.
