SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Spurs General Manager R.C. Buford was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated following an accident.

The accident happened late Friday at West Martin and Pecos La Trinidad. News 4 WOAI was told Buford faces DWI and "open container" charges.  Officials with the Bexar County Jail confirmed Buford bonded out of jail early Saturday morning.

The Spurs released the following statement concerning Buford's arrest:

RC Buford, president of sports franchises for Spurs Sports & Entertainment, was involved in a single car accident on Friday evening in San Antonio. The event involving Buford, who is a type 1 diabetic, was precipitated by a severe

low blood sugar reaction. A San Antonio police officer responded to the scene and Buford was subsequently detained and charged with possession of an open container and a DUI. No injuries were caused by the accident.

“I take great pride in being a positive member of our community and deeply regret this incident,”  said Buford. “I apologize to our community, our fans and the entire Spurs family.”

The Spurs and Buford indicated they will have no further comments on the incident.

Buford first joined the Spurs staff in 1988, and has been the general manager since 2002.

Hmm, lets see. full cup of liquid that smells like alcohol, open container rattling around inside of vehicle, strong odor of alcohol on breath, oh yeah, stumbling and not able to keep his balance, and last but not least crashing into a fence. Gee Andy, do you think he's drunk? I don't know Barney.

People with money can pay off the judge. So we will be hearing about this one being dropped. Just like the one judge that got caught DWI and his case was dropped. The legal system is great for people with $$$$.

So let me get this straight, he is a type 1 diabetic and had a severe low blood sugar reaction? They found open container in his vehicle and was charged with DUI. It is my understanding that the carbs in a beer/liquor actually RAISES your glucose levels as opposed to lowering them and that's why most doctors forbid diabetics to eat foods containing alot of carbs. Seems like the Spurs may not know anything about diabetes but, use the PR stance to put something out to the media. SHAME on the SPURS for trying to feed BS excuse to the fans! Also, the news stated he had to have a blood draw, does this mean he refused field sobriety tests?
