A theme to learning

SAN ANTONIO --Space, water and the Earth are just some of the topics students are learning about Highland Park Elementary is in the San Antonio Independent School District. The school is taking a different approach to helping students learn by creating lessons based on themes. It's What's Cool In School.


S-O-U-P-E-R Bowl

February 3, 2012:

SAN ANTONIO -- The Patriots or the Giants? Who will win the big game? That's the question on sports fans minds. But, it's also on the minds of the some local elementary schoolers. They've turned the Super Bowl into the "S-o-u-p-e-r Bowl."

Kristina De Leon spoke to the group at Wiederstein Elementary in the Schertz-Cibolo School District about their friendly competition.


SIOP: New teaching method adds twist to lesson plans

January 16, 2012:

Imagine chucking the lesson plan to learn outside or by competing with other students. It's all part of a new way of teaching called SIOP, or Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol.


Gates Millennium Scholar goes to college

Plus, even if they can go back, they do not feel prepared for college courses or have just been out of school for so long, it's tough for them. But there's a program that provides grownups free preparation for college.

A local swimmer is winning big, and she's doing it with a disability. Abby McAlpin is hearing impaired, but that isn't stopping her from taking to the water. In fact, the high schooler hopes to compete to the upcoming Deaf Olympics.

School helps special needs kids reach goals

September 12, 2011:

It's often difficult for a child with special needs to learn in a regular classroom. But there's a new school designed to help kids reach their goals.

The school is an addition to the Morgan's Wonderland Park and is specifically designed for kids with special needs. Now their vision is growing with classes for these special students to learn and grow.
