SAN ANTONIO - A San Antonio Independent School District board member says she thinks parents aren't getting what they approved in the $515 million 2010 bond election. Patti Radle says she's not supporting removing the track in Alamo Stadium to make room for a professional sized soccer field, and she says parents don't want the change.
According to the results of a phone survey provided by Radle, nearly three-fourths of her district supports renovating the stadium to support middle and high school track, football and soccer. Only 22 percent supported removing the track to make room for a FIFA-sized soccer field.
"This is a major thing and I don't think that's reflected in the language on the ballot," Radle said, referring to the 2010 election. "People voted on it and passed it, but the language lacks description of what's happening."
The bond package includes $35 million worth of improvements to the stadium.
The district is in talks to have the track events at the larger Wheatley Heights Athletic Complex on the east side, however no agreement has been reached. Having a professional-sized soccer field at Alamo Stadium could attract professional teams and events, which could bring in money to SAISD, according to a district spokesperson.
The board members could vote Tuesday to make the changes.
