SAN ANTONIO - High school athletes suffer from nearly 100,000 concussions every year. With that, doctors have a message for parents.

“Before they let their child step on the field or pick up the baseball bat or cheerleading pyramid, that they get this baseline test done,” explained Dr. Evan Ratner from Impact Urgent Care.

A baseline test? Ever heard of it?

It's a state-of-the art test that gets a snapshot of the brain now to find damage done later In the event of a sports injury.

Doctors feel so strongly about it that a local clinic is offering the tests for free! All month long!

It's a complicated neuro-cognitive test disguised as a video game. In just 20 minutes the test reveals how the brain is functioning, tests immediate memory, delayed memory, reaction time and the processing speed of the brain. The purpose is to get a picture of the brain now, so doctors can have something to compare to in the event of an injury.

“That helps us to have significant insight in both figuring out how severe the injury is and how the injury has resolved,” said Dr. Ratner.

The test is a standard in major league football, baseball and hockey as it lets coaches know when it's safe for an athlete to return.

Impact Urgent Care is offering the tests at no charge throughout August. Call (210) 493-HELP to make an appointment.
