SAN ANTONIO -- A much beloved San Antonio high school principal lost his battle with cancer this week.

Former O'Connor High School principal Larry Martin passed away Thursday.

Martin worked in education for 29 years. He had been at O'Connor High School since 2000 and was principal there from 2003 until he retired in December 2009.

A Northside Independent School District spokesperson said Martin "will be remembered as a kind human being who always put children first."

News 4 WOAI was there as students and staff rallied around Martin last November while he was still battling the cancer. They held a pep rally, of sorts, for him, and all of the O'Connor Panthers varsity football players even turned a school tradition into a personal tribute to Martin by 'loaning' him their jerseys to show he was their favorite 'teacher.' Martin's funeral is Saturday, February 6 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Church.

How sad. At least he made a positive impact on a lot of people while he was here. My HS principal passed away from cancer too, not very long before our graduation. It was difficult, but we were sure to honor him during our graduation ceremony and we had many fond memories of him.
