SAN ANTONIO -- It can be difficult to hear that a loved one has been diagnosed with breast cancer but how do you tell a child?
Amanda Ormsby was only eight years old when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Now, at 23, she's helping others through their ordeals.
She says, “My mom and dad decided that because I was so young, they wanted to not tell me, to not scare me, until it was absolutely necessary."
Even at such a young age, Amanda could tell something was wrong. She started acting up afraid her mother would leave her.
Amanda Ormsby recalls, "I had this incredible fear of abandonment. No one was telling me what was going on. I just had this fear that she was going to leave."
Amanda says once she knew her mother's diagnosis, she wasn't as scared. She volunteered with race for the cure in El Paso and at just 11 years old raised more than a thousand dollars for research. Now, she's sharing her experience with others.
