SAN ANTONIO -- Animal Care Services completed its 5000th adoption for the fiscal year. That's the most adoptions the shelter has ever done in its 60+ year history.

"Chex Mix" was adopted just before 3:00 p.m Wednesday by Kathy Deweese. Deweese chose the male Chihuahua mix after noticing his beautiful caramel-colored eyes.

Chex Mix's adoption came during the first day of ACS's participation in the ASPCA $100K Challenge. The competition runs August 1st -October 31st and features the top 50 shelters in the country as chosen by their residents. Each shelter in the challenge commits to saving as many lives as they can over the three month contest period. The shelter with the largest live release increase takes home $100,000.

Animal Care officials say they're bringing some Texas-sized determination to the contest with reduced adoption pricing and weekly specials, including ACS Sweetheart deals, Two Fur Tuesdays, Free Feline Fridays as well as a host of fun events for would-be adopters

ACS is located at 4710 State Highway 151 off Old Highway 90.

All ACS pets are sterilized, vaccinated, de-wormed, licensed and microchipped. Every adopter receives a bag of premium food for their new pet as well as two free tickets to Sea World.
