SAN ANTONIO – Back in June, the Whataburger restaurant chain announced it bought a building at Jones-Maltsberger and U.S. 281 for its home office. In Nov. 2008, the company announced it was relocating from Corpus Christi to San Antonio.

The new location has more than 140,000 square feet and will house all of the company’s business functions to support its 700+ restaurants. Of Whataburger’s approximately 250 home-office members, more than 60 percent will relocate to San Antonio from Corpus Christi, with the remaining vacant positions filled locally. Interested job applicants in the San Antonio area can submit their résumés through www.whataburger.com.

At the time, the business cited the lessened impact from hurricanes, cost-efficient office space, improved travel connections to the 10 states it does business in, and a larger work force from which to recruit as reasons for the move.

Preston Atkinson, Whataburger Restaurants, LP President and COO was quoted saying, “Purchasing this building is an important step in the process of moving our headquarters to San Antonio. We will begin moving into the building in June, and plan to have the transition complete by late summer.”

The Jones-Maltsberger building once housed Tesoro. The refiner and marketer of petroleum products moved its headquarters to Ridgewood Park near the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 281 and Loop 1604 in North San Antonio.

Whataburger announced in a news release it will continue to maintain a presence in Corpus Christi.

A spokesperson admits the selection of an address on Jones-“MALTS-BURGER” was a just happy coincidence.
