SAN ANTONIO - It's O.K. to text and ride.

In fact, VIA is encouraging it.

VIA on Wednesday announced its new text-messaging service which provides real-time bus arrival information.

The service works on any cell phone, not just smart phones.

Here's how it works: riders can text the number 5-2-0-2-0, then, in the body of the message, type in the bus stop number, a space, then type in the route number and hit send.

A text should arrive within seconds with the next scheduled arrival time.

@ jmsfmtex - Do you have a phone capable of sending/receiving texts? Who paid for it?

Phones most likely paid for by the taxpayers.
