SAN ANTONIO -- On Sunday, San Antonio police officers and firefighters will run a 5k in full gear in memory of 9/11.
The first police officer and firefighter to cross the finish line in full gear will win a trip to New York and represent the City of San Antonio in the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5k-New York.
Siller, a New York firefighter, died on 9/11. He was already off work and was one of the first to voluntarily return to help out.
"He heard what happened, he went back to his station, got his 60 pounds of gear and was headed to the tower," explained Officer Matt Porter of the San Antonio Police Department. "He got to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel where traffic was jammed up, so he got out and ran with all his gear into the second tower."
Sunday's Tunnel to Towers run will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Alamo Plaza and end there, too. It's open to everyone.
