LUMBERTON, TX -- Texas public schools have come under fire again. This time, a teacher allegedly encouraged high school girls to dress up in full-length Islamic burqas and then instructed the entire class that Muslim terrorists are actually freedom fighters.

The incident occurred in a world geography class at Lumberton High School in the small town of Lumberton, Texas. The general topic of the class that day was Islam.

An unnamed student informed reporters that the teacher said, “We are going to work to change your perception of Islam.”

“I do not necessarily agree with this,” the teacher also allegedly said, “but I am supposed to teach you that we are not to call these people terrorists anymore, but freedom fighters.”

The controversial lesson came from a lesson plan provided by CSCOPE, an all-embracing, online K-12 educational curriculum used in 80 percent of the school districts in Texas. A rapidly growing chorus of critics charges that CSCOPE is a radical, backdoor way for progressives to circumvent both the Texas legislative process and the desires of local school boards and communities.

A student in the class told reporters that the burqa-related lesson focused mainly on the lives of women in Muslim countries. The enveloping outer face and body covering was treated more or less as a fashion accessory.

Apparently, no mention was made of the fact that women in Saudi Arabia and Iran must wear the garment under threat of arrest and criminal punishment.

At the end of class, the teacher assigned a paper about Egypt. A student explained to reporters that the topic of the paper was “how Egypt was a good country until democracy took over, and that things were finally corrected when the Muslim Brotherhood came into power.”

State Sen. Dan Patrick, chairman of the Texas state senate’s education committee, told Fox News that he found the photograph of the burqa-clad female students disturbing. Patrick was also concerned that the CSCOPE lesson apparently blames democracy for turmoil in Egypt and paints the Muslim Brotherhood as some political savior.

“Parents are very sensitive to any issue that seems to be anti-American — that blames democracy for some sort of trouble in the world,” Patrick told Fox News.

BTW, twister2, I HAVE been looking through the CSCOPE curriculum...or what is available online. Realize, CSCOPE has a problem with allowing information out and the subjects addessed online only give an outline, not the actual lesson plan, and nothing I've found addresses anything in the last century or so, and some that would have has been crossed out. Maybe with the new agreement & changes, more info will be available, but I figure they'll find a way around it. Oh, they DO have an agenda, t2. Why else all the secrecy and previous civil or criminal penalties associated with the release of CSCOPE content? Do you REALLY want your child being taught something kept under such secrecy with penalties if info is released, whether it pertains to Muslims, Jews, Christians, Aztecs, or Native Americans?

Okay, twister2, then explain why there are to be sweeping changes to CSCOPE due to all the concerns over their curriculum in recent months. These changes include transparency and an "Amendment of all Terms of Use Agreements, signed by both teachers and districts, removing civil or criminal penalties associated with the release of CSCOPE content." Here is what I posted about you being wrong on the other board: Stop it Lervia, you are just plain wrong on this. No lectures are going to hide that you are wrong and don't know what you are talking about. This lesson in question was not based on CSCOPE, so you were wrong on that. If you bothered to actually look at other "questionable" CSCOPE lessons, you would see they do not have any agenda other than getting students to ask questions and think critically, so you are wrong on that. CSCOPE lessons are written to address the Texas curriculum; if you bothered to read the curriculum, you would see it is somewhat conservative, so you are wrong there as well. Instead of bothering to read or find ANY actual documents, you choose to rely on conservative hearsay; that makes you a dream to a Republican politician, but very dangerous to intelligence and honesty.

twister2, you are the ultimate liberal talking point & shill, and not a very nice man. Here's what I posted in response to you on the other article on this same subject. twister2, Lumberton is the hometown of the author of the article I referenced on prisonplanet, which is anything but an obscure website. Maybe you should visit it. I figure that when you do, we'll feel the Earth shake. The author has been bringing forth the CSCOPE curriculum with regard to Muslim teachings for a while now, so this story is nothing truly new, except for the fact that the picture of the girls in Burkas leaked out. The author has visited with school administration regarding this issue, and has visited with some of the students involved in this course and their parents. The issue is being fought over in our Legislature. The only lies coming about on this issue are the school districts hiding their culpability. But, all of this is falling upon your deaf and dumb ears, and you will continue to do that which you do so well....spin & twist, twist & spin, attempt to divert attention from the issue at hand with bullying tactics and words, never answer questions or challenges, call those that oppose your opinion "Pathetic, hypocritical, losers" (which is resorting to the same level you accuse others of), then crow about how wonderful and right you are. You are the pathetic one, twister2, and a total waste of time. I'm not playing. Oh, and when the only thing you offer is the official statement from the school denying all of this, you didn't answer the challenge I gave you. Toodles!!

So that is your defense, huh Lervia? You make a statement about CSCOPE which you refuse to back up. You tell me to prove you wrong, which I do? And despite being proved wrong on multiple levels, you still defend your position by saying everyone else and there documentation is lying, while your rumor-based website is truthful. That is sad, you aren't doing the conservative movement any favors by denying reality.

Of course the school will deny it. Let's hear from students & parents: http://www.prisonplanet.com/lumberton-isd-texas-students-told-to-wear-muslim-burqas-in-cscope-high-school-lesson.html

And here is another district statement claiming this was not a CSCOPE lesson:http://www.lumberton.k12.tx.us/education/components/whatsnew/default.php?sectiondetailid=10420&viewType=detail&id=1500. I bet some people are feeling really stupid right now for making all the nutty claims that they made. And I was correct, as usual.

Don Burqas was a friend to my father, and made arrangements to take care of the problems that the colonistas brought in a decade ago. It is a fact that these Mexicans can be trained in the Catholic way and we can all live peacefully once the rules are properly recognized. I distrusted the man, because he wore a beard, and hair on the face is a sign of deceit, but I will admit that he honored my sister at her wedding even though it was common knowledge that she was no longer a virgin. Don Burqas was a respected man, so many pretended that her hymen was intact and the ceremony was allowed to continue on to the dancing part, where my uncle drank too much and started vomiting when the mariachi music started, because he has a nervous problem and the beat of the accordions and the trumpets apparently triggered a fit of epilepsy and this white guy from the ambulance started screaming something about the pledge of allegiance while he gave him a shot that made my uncle relax. And that is when I suddenly understood the secret of marriage, that it takes two to tango, and listening to television is corrupt because of the advertisements, which include fugitive positions in the market that are doomed to fail. In other words, you can't buy toilet paper with a debit card that has run out of money. This is why Americans are completely dependent on credit.

By the way, Lervia, while the burden of proof is on you, not me, here is the district's explanation of the 'freedom fighters' lesson. Please note CSCOPE is mentioned nowhere in this statement:http://www.lumberton.k12.tx.us/education/components/whatsnew/default.php?sectiondetailid=10420&viewType=detail&id=1506.
