SAN ANTONIO -- Police say it was a teenager that shot two men trying to barge into his family's house. One was killed and officers say he's a suspected gang member.
Family members told News 4 WOAI they don't know why the suspects targeted their house. The homeowners were too afraid of retaliation to speak about the deadly home invasion on camera after an 18-year-old fired several shots at two intruders.
Neighbor Ruby Campos says, “We heard six gunshots. Then we heard a car drive off and then we heard them screaming."
According to police, the teen grabbed his mom's gun when he spotted two suspicious-acting men approaching the house after getting out of a light-colored Suburban.
SAPD Sgt. Gabe Trevino says the teen “…said that he feared for the safety of his family, and therefore he retrieved a weapon that he had inside the house. He was standing in the living room when the suspects kicked in the front door."
One suspect was shot in the neck. He tried running away but died at the scene. Investigators say the teen shot the other suspect in the head.
“We do believe that for whatever reason, and we're trying to figure it out now, that this home was targeted," Sgt. Trevino said.
Police did find a gun they say the dead suspect dropped in the street and officers do not think the injured suspect is going to survive.
Officers are also looking for a tan or beige Chevy Suburban with a missing hubcap seen leaving the scene. It also has a handicap tag hanging in the window.
