SAN ANTONIO -- The Alamo City got a historic visit today by a former member of the First Family. Steve Ford - son of former president, Gerald Ford - was the keynote speaker at Alpha Home's "Doorways of Hope" luncheon. The event is an annual fundraiser for the organization that helps women treat their addiction to drugs and alcohol. It's a cause Ford wanted to bring attention to, especially after he and his own mother, Betty, battled alcoholism for years.
"It's a disease that affects everybody," Ford said. "It's just not the person that's homeless or on the streets. It affects everyone of us in all our neighborhoods."
Since it first opened in 1966, Alpha Home reports they've helped over 8,000 women and they have an 86% rate of graduates who become clean and sober.
"Our ladies come to us with all kinds of trauma," says Julie Wisdom-Wild, CEO of Alpha Home. "Many of them have tried before to get clean and sober. I've been in recovery for 25 years from alcohol and drugs myself. So many of us at Alpha Home know the struggles and the trauma that our ladies have been through. We give them hope. We offer them a new way of life."
