SAN ANTONIO – The city of San Antonio is opening a bulky waste collection center for people to dispose of big items sitting around their homes, garages and offices – for free.

It opens Saturday, January 19, at 1800 Bitters just north of San Antonio International Airport.

"We want to encourage residents: don't dump it on the side of the road. Bring it to us. We'll take care of it for you,” Tiffany Edmonds with the city’s Solid Waste Management Department says.

Edmonds says the center will accept a variety of large, unwieldy items like car tires, couches and carpets.

"We'll have individuals here that will help you,” she says. “We'll find out what residents have."

She says people can load up their cars with appliances, furniture – anything that’s too big to put out in the normal trash load – and bring it to the center.

Workers will help them throw the items into giant dumpsters.

"This is a great opportunity for residents to dispose of items that they normally wouldn't know what to do with,” Edmonds says.

She says it’s also an easy way to go green because 80% of what’s inside an average house can be recycled.

"At the end of the day we look at each of the containers and see what needs to be recycled and what needs to go to the landfill,” Edmonds says.

All residents need to bring is their CPS bills to show they’ve paid the required environmental free.

The center’s regular hours will be Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

The city’s Solid Waste Management Division’s website has more information on safe ways to dispose of and recycle trash.

This is an example of how over regulation can effect the desired outcome. Those without a utility bill will continue to dump illegally. What are the chances of someone coming all the way over here to take advantage of this facility?
