SAN ANTONIO -- For the first time since 9/11, the Transportation Security Administration will let passengers carry small knives and some previously banned sports equipment as carry-on items.
News 4 was able to go behind the scenes and take a look at some of the weapons travelers brought into the San Antonio International Airport, including, a bow and arrow, bullets, and a massive knife.
"You wouldn't imagine that most people come through a check point with an item like this," said Charles Honore, Assistant Federal Security Director.
Honore said on Monday, two people were arrested for bringing guns to the airport. Another prohibited item a traveler recently took into the airport was a toy gun.
"It's a replica of a weapon, so you're not allowed to take anything that looks like a weapon," added Honore.
The TSA takes all takes the collection of abandoned items, and turns them over to the city for disposal.
Soon knives with blades that are 2.36 inches (6 centimeters) or shorter and less than 1/2 wide will be allowed on flights. Razor blades and box cutters are still not permitted.
Other items travelers will be allowed to have as carry-ons include two golf clubs, and other sport sticks such as ski poles and hockey sticks.
The TSA says it relaxed the rules after assessing risk to travelers, and the agency will devote more time focusing on real threats.
"Obviously those threats to us are improvised explosive devices, that's what we're looking for," added Honore.
The new changes will take effect April 25, and will bring the United States into alignment with international rules.
