San Antonio - Many Americans who have fallen on hard times have turned to food stamps to feed their families.
The government assistance only covers food for people, not their pets.
That has given rise to a new non-profit that provides food stamps for pet owners who can't afford to feed their animals.
It's called pet food stamps.
The founder launched the program two weeks ago.
It has already received more than 12,000 requests for assistance.
Applicants who qualify are helped through independent retailer, Petfooddirect.
Pet food amounts are based on the amount of assistance the owners qualify for.
