San Antonio -- It’s estimated that 20,000 protestors hit the streets of Phoenix, marching against Arizona's controversial immigration law.
More than 50 protestors from San Antonio made their way to the National Day to Speak Out rally this weekend. Their objective was to protest against Senate Bill 1070. The law allows officers to check immigration status, while enforcing another law, and if they "reasonably suspect" a person is in the United States illegally.
Most people who protested on Saturday believe the law encourages racial profiling.
Roberto Flotte is a college student from Austin. He's originally from Mexico, but hoping to one day become a us citizen. On Saturday, he not only marched for himself and for the experience, but for the family he still has across the border.
"There were a lot of children,” Flotte remembered. “I saw a lot of children and that was very important. A lot of families and a lot of mothers with their kids."
The diversity of the protest group is what stood out to him most; people, young and old, braving the heat to speak out.
"We got back inspired, especially by the stories and by the organizers in Phoenix. Many of them don't sleep and haven't slept in weeks, but they keep fighting," Flotte told News 4 WOAI.
Senate Bill 1070 is set to go into effect in late July.
Protestors like Roberto Flotte are hoping the federal government will step in before then to repeal the law.
