SAN ANTONIO – The blood bank here is working with other area blood banks to help the Fort Hood shooting victims.

Type O negative is considered the “universal blood type” because it can be transfused to a patient of any blood type in an emergency. The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center has sent blood and platelets to doctors handling the wounded and needs to replenish its supplies.

STBTC has six locations in San Antonio, one in New Braunfels and one in Victoria Texas. All locations are currently accepting O negative donors. Call 210-731-5590 or visit the Web site www.southtexasblood.org for business hours.

Donors must present identification. Anyone who is 16 years old weighing 120 pounds (with parental consent form), or at least 17 years old weighing 110 pounds and in good general health may donate blood.

The center stresses that normally, 600 units of blood are required in South Texas hospitals everyday to save lives.
