SAN ANTONIO - More than 100,000 people took to the East Side today for the 26th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March. It's one of the largest marches in the country.

SLIDESHOW: MLK March…

We caught up with one of the organizers of the march, Councilwoman Ivy Taylor, and asked her why our local march is such a big draw.

“Folks all across San Antonio want to be a part of it and San Antonio is the type of place where everyone feels welcome to participate,” explained Taylor.

That sentiment was echoed by other marchers we spoke with who say Dr. King's message is one we can all relate to.

“I think that what he stood for -- tenants of equality, freedom. We can all resonate with,” said march participant Tanya Hartfield.

“It's a time to celebrate life, opportunities and the rights that we have. People that have suffered for us. People that have served for us. Generations previous and it's just a great time for people to be unified of all walks of life,” said march participant Amos Duncan.

While it's the 26th year San Antonio has held the march, the late reverend Dr. Raymond Callies began leading processions here soon after Dr. King's death in 1968.

Then I will blame WOAI writers for erroneous transcribing of this ladys statment. She batted .500 in descriptive wording but WOAI struck out completely.

@Camidawg, just to clarify for those without a dictionary at hand, the word meant was tenet (a priniple, doctrine, or belief held as a truth, as by some group). As for resonate...........You know, I've heard and read this word used in this same context for so long and never really realized how wrong it is!! Thank you!!!

“I think that what he stood for -- tenants of equality, freedom. We can all resonate with,” .....OK I have to break this down because when people try to use words sometimes they know not what they say----they just want to sound smart. Tenants-one who has the occupation or temporary possession of lands or tenements of another....I don't think equality and freedom pay me rent money....Resonate-An intransitive verb more suited to define musical harmony than an action of solidarity......I'm just sayin I know what she meant, but it just came out wrong.

i would wager that the majority Did Vote, and that's one reason we're all in this mess for four more years.

Yeah, we didn't get out garbage picked up today either. I guess all the garbage trucks were on the parade. Notice we don't get pick up on MLK Day but we do during Veteran's Day. Guess we don't count the same as a million mile march that makes the national news.
