SAN ANTONIO - After one rate increase by the Edwards Aquifer Authority and one by San Antonio Water System this year, SAWS customers will learn next month if their water bills will need to go up again next year. The water utility wants to make sure everyone understands why.

SAWS is holding at least 20 community meetings before the 9.9% rate increase is put to a vote. The increase would raise the average monthly bill by about five dollars.

The largest part of the rate proposal would fund rehabilitation of the city's sewer system, replacing aging infrastructure and expanding efforts to reduce sewer overflows. Construction of a groundwater desalination plant in southern Bexar County would also be paid for by the increase.

“It is important that we invest in our sewer system to reduce the number of sewer overflows in San Antonio and comply with the federal Clean Water Act," said Robert R. Puente, SAWS President/CEO. "At the same time, our growing community needs water for a prosperous future."

They ought to start by cutting out all of the stupid commercials they pay for on all the TV stations; reduce the bonuses and other abusive practices in their own house, and then explain where the funds they already receive are going. A nearly 10% increase is HUGE! However, as others have observed, we don’t really have a “vote” on this at all. We need a class action lawsuit to challenge these “public” utilities who have a monopoly on our services.

So 2013 is not even here yet and the city has hit us with. Pre-K tax, Saws, and CPS increase. This is on top of the Federal tax increase starting in January. My New Years resolution: Move out of San Antonio.

What do you want to bet that the people that fill in these meeting are paid to come to them by SAWS.

The 20 "community meetings" are a cruel farse. Citizens just go there to waste their time, breath and saliva in trying to put a stop to the official corporate abuse, and in the end the "utility companies" ignore any public input and rise rates anyway, rise their executives salaries, perks and bonuses (and parties) anyway, while the service keeps going at a mediocre level, at best. Just one advice for the decent folk who goes to these meeting thinking they can convince SAWS to stop screwing us: take some petrolatum with you.
