SAN ANTONIO -- We may all soon be paying more for water. That's because the San Antonio Water System estimates the utility will need a 6.9% rate increase next year, just to cover the costs of improving the sewer system and to continue with current water projects.

That would translate to customers paying about $3.43 more a month. Former BexarMet customers would see a $1.99 rate increase, because only the sewer portion of their bill would be affected. The SAWS board is expected to approve a five-year block of annual rate increases by November and present them to city council for a vote by December.

SAWS is holding two public meetings to discuss the plan and is asking for everyone to attend. The first one will be held tomorrow at the Pan American Branch Library. The second meeting will be held Thursday at St. Mary's University. Both meetings start at 6:30 p.m.

Let's see - I will receive a 1.5% raise this year and had an increase in the costs of my health care coverage - I will certainly have enough to pay a 6.9 % increase! I don't think $3 per month covers many homes.
