SAN ANTONIO - The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has put booster seats to the test. They found most aren't doing the job because they don't fit well.
They tested 72 seats with dummies crashing at 35 miles per hour. They list 21 booster seats as best buys; seven as good bets and eight seats are not recommended. They also found that 36 of the boosters will only work in certain vehicles.
Here's something that might surprise you: It's recommended kids stay in child seats until they are 4’9” tall.
The best-rated boosters are the Combi Dakota backless with clip, Recaro Young Sport highback (combination seat), Recaro Vivo highback, Maxi-Cosi Rodi XR dual-use highback, Evenflo Big Kid Amp backless with clip, Eddie Bauer Auto Booster dual-use highback, Cosco Juvenile Pronto dual-use highback, Britax Frontier highback (combination seat), and Clek Oobr dual-use highback.
