AUSTIN, TX -- Bluebonnets are the state flower for Texas and jalapeños are the state pepper, but what is the official dessert? You might be surprised that Texas doesn't have one.

Now, a group of school children are hoping to change that, by asking lawmakers to make the treat a state symbol. Today, the Administration Committee at the Capitol approved SCR 12, a bill that would designate the pecan pie as the official state pie of Texas. The bill will not be up for vote by the full Senate.

I make a pecan pie that is gone in a blink and everyone wants my recipe. I only make them around the holidays so it's not a year around thing. I am fortunate to get several pounds of free pecans every year. That may be the secret ingrediant. If the pecans aren't fresh it's not as good. I am a native Texan and agree this should be the state pie and also agree that chicken fried steak should be the state plate, LOL. Love a good chicken fried steak. My husband says a restaurant's success is based on my opionion of their chicken fried steak NOT a chicken fried rib eye! That's so northern it's funny. Our family in Florida looks forward to our visits. They love the fajitas (you have to ask the butcher for beef skirt there, they don't have "fajitas". We got the weirdest look from the butcher when we asked for it.:)

Speaking of Pie. Happy Pi Day (March 14th)! It's the other Pi (3.1415...), which doesn't taste as good, but is less fattening, to me LOL!

I feel it is necessary to rebuke the Goode Pie Company (I believe that is their name), which is a Texas pie making company, though based in Houston which is firmly in the hands of the Devil. They make an excellent pecan pie, but the price, at around $30 for one pie) is aggregious, outrageous and wholely unacceptable. No pie should be priced at much more than $15 and even that is kind of pricey. I have contacted the office of Brother Rick Perry, the Governor, on several occasions to complain about this matter, but my complaints have fallen on deaf ears. I know that the Governor is a busy man, but price gouging for good pie (no pun intended) is a serious matter and as important as any which faces the state at this time.

I think Texas should put a pecan pie and a chicken fried steak on the state flag. Of course they may have to make the flag larger like Texan butts.

While a slice of GOOD pecan pie is among my favorite treats (I'm NOT much of a sweets eater), and would be a perfect fit for the official Texas dessert, I do think that the TX Leg has much more important issues to address.
