SCHERTZ, Texas – Schertz EMS has introduced a new ambulance service program called “Passport to Care.” It’s a plan designed to help the agency increase its revenue, while reducing costs for certain residents willing to pay a small membership fee, according to Dudley Wait, Schertz EMS Director.
“I think the primary thing we want people to know is that this does not effect 911 coverage.”
Wait spoke with News 4 WOAI Monday to clear up some concerns viewers had about the membership program.
He says the Passport to Care plan guarantees no out-of-pocket costs for insured and not insured members each time an ambulance is dispatched to their homes for certain medical emergencies. Wait says those receiving assistance from Medicaid are restricted from joining the new plan.
Still, Schertz EMS workers promise an ambulance will be dispatched to anyone in the community needing help.
“We’re going to show up,” said Wait. “We are going to treat you with the utmost care and respect, regardless of your ability to pay, regardless of your membership status.”
Schertz EMS has advised residents about the new program since December. The deadline to sign-up for Passport to Care was Monday, March 15, 2010.
