SAN ANTONIO -- The Alamo City received a visit from legendary journalist, Maria Hinojosa, who is known for her work showcasing the stories of those often not heard, including undocumented immigrants. Today, she spoke to dozens of students as the keynote speaker of the Adelante Awards Gala.
"They need to understand that their future is not just about being successful in a career or a corporate job," Hinojosa said. "All of these young people have to be successful for the rest of us, so that our economy and our society grows."
Hinojosa herself has been a model of success. She has reported for prestigious media organizations such as CBS, CNN, and NPR. She is also the first Latina to anchor and executive produce a Frontline report on PBS. It's through her experiences that she can give back to the community, including students who will soon begin their own lives after college.
"What we know right now is that Latinos are getting a mixed message," Hinojosa said. "So, it's very important for our young people to feel empowered, to feel like they can own their voice and at the same time to not be depressed by what's happening in this reality. They have to understand that they need to focus on the positive."
