SAN ANTONIO- It's a miracle she even survived. A local woman stabbed 30 times allegedly at the hands of her husband is recovering nearly three months after the horrendous attack. And now family, friends, and strangers are showing their support through a benefit fundraiser held in her honor.
Terry Barron was attacked just outside Bonham Academy on South St. Mary's Street when she went to drop off lunch money for her daughter at school last August.
Terry said it was her soon to be ex-husband, 38- year old Robert Barron who nearly took her life that day outside the school, because she was leaving him. Since then she has struggled to recover physically, emotionally and financially.
“The trauma surgeons at SAMMC they were surprised that I made it. I wasn't supposed to survive,” explained Terry Barron.
As Terry talked to supporters at a benefit plate sale held at Sanchez Icehouse in her honor she wore a smile on her face.
In fact, at first glance you would probably never guess that Terry survived life- threatening stab wounds. Her visible scars are minimal with a swollen lip, and a couple of scars on her face. But she is also recovering from nerve damage on her hands and a severed valve to her heart.
“I’m going through cardio therapy,” said Terry. “They're treating me as an open heart surgery patient”.
And just as painful for Terry is that while she is working on recuperating she can not financially provide for her three children. She is a registered nurse whose health insurance was covered under her husband's employment. But, now that he has been charged with aggravated assault, he is no longer employed.
Fundraiser’s like the one held on Saturday will help Terry with basic living needs.
“It helps me keep the lights on in my house and water running, my mortgage paid”.
Terry has a long road to recovery. But, she counts her blessings and even wants to help other victims of domestic abuse by volunteering at the Battered Women's Shelter. If you would like to make a donation, there is an account set up with Wells Fargo in Terry Barron’s name.
