SAN ANTONIO -- You can get the seasonal flu vaccine free of charge as part of a new vaccine study.

The seasonal flu this year is seeing the launching of a new vaccine study that is focusing on a high-priority group - people who are 60 years old and older.

Clinical Trials of Texas is conducting the trial that will be reviewed carefully by the Food and Drug Administration. The study is a test of new technology.

"The current vaccine uses a very old technology of making the vaccine," explained Dr. Albert Mosqueda. "This is comparing a new method of making the vaccine that, hopefully, will be quicker to produce and safer."

The Centers for Disease Control estimates it takes at least six months to manufacture the typical flu vaccine right now.

Clinical Trials of Texas is enrolling 50 people this week and hopes to get at least another 50 next week.

You must be 60 years old and in good general health. You can have a few medical problems, but they should be chronic problems that are controlled and stable.

"I heard about the study and thought it would be a good thing to do," said Jim Stephenson, who is participating in the trial. "It's a chance to get the vaccine and help out."

If you decide to participate, Clinical Trials of Texas will follow up and check with you during the duration of the flu season. They will pay you for your expenses during the study.
