SAN ANTONIO -- A few good soldiers need homes, but these soldiers are of the four legged kind.
Joint Base San Antonio Lackland is looking for foster families to house puppies that will later become military service dogs. Chosen families will house a puppy until six months of age. Afterwards, the puppy will return to Lackland to start security training. If a puppy is found unsuitable for service, the foster parent will then have a chance to adopt.
Each puppy comes with free dog food, leashes, collars, a dog crate and Lackland will provide free veterinarian care. Foster families are expected to help the puppy experience different environments and create social skills, by including them in family outings. Also, families must bring the puppy to Lackland at least once a month for free medical checkups and training sessions.
