SAN ANTONIO -- A few good soldiers need homes, but these soldiers are of the four legged kind.

Joint Base San Antonio Lackland is looking for foster families to house puppies that will later become military service dogs. Chosen families will house a puppy until six months of age. Afterwards, the puppy will return to Lackland to start security training. If a puppy is found unsuitable for service, the foster parent will then have a chance to adopt.

Each puppy comes with free dog food, leashes, collars, a dog crate and Lackland will provide free veterinarian care. Foster families are expected to help the puppy experience different environments and create social skills, by including them in family outings. Also, families must bring the puppy to Lackland at least once a month for free medical checkups and training sessions.

If you're interested in becoming a foster parent, fill out an application at www.37trw.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-120925-110.pdf.

I would love to help but my fox terrier and rat terrier would probably pack their bowls and leave. The chiweenie would welcome it and play until they were both worn out. Another reason; I would probably get attached and not want to give it up besides, three dogs are plenty!
