SAN ANTONIO -- All fireworks displays are banned in Bexar County. That includes all public displays, including city-sponsored events at parks and at military installations in town. But just because there won't be fireworks, doesn't mean you can't celebrate. The city's official July 4th celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park will go on as planned minus the fireworks.

"That's sort of what San Antonio is about - families and fun, I think," said Jackie Rutledge, WOAI's General Manager.

News 4 WOAI is proudly co-sponsoring the event this year.

"So, we are very excited, and we hope to bring new energy and new excitement to this project," Rutledge added.

There will still be food, a parade, and live music throughout the day. We hope you'll come on out and join us this Independence Day.

'Take Note' performing at Woodlawn Lake on July 4th

The 4th of July Weekend is practically here and we are gearing up for the activities at Woodlawn Lake Park. News 4 Woai Photojournalist Jonathan Cruz has a taste of the fun you will have if you join us, with the sounds of "Take Note" ...

Where to Park

If you plan to celebrate the Fourth of July at Woodlawn Lake, parking will be limited. Officials say more than 15,000 people will be attending the all day event, which begins at 11:30 Monday with a parade.

There are two lots available for parking. But VIA bus #90 will also be dropping people off in front of the lake if you don't want to drive.

Last year dozens of drivers received tickets for parking in bike lanes, so stay clear of those areas. Also look for temporary or permanent signage to avoid a ticket. San Antonio Police Officers will begin placing barricades on streets the day before the 4th.

News 4 WOAI, a sponsor of the event, will be out there all day giving away items, and you'll have the opportunity to meet some of our New 4 WOAI family.

The city is promoting the festivities at Woodlawn Lake and asking for a big turnout. Then why are they blocking off every single parking lot and grassy area surrounding the lake? Then they give out tickets and start towing cars for people parking on the streets around the lake. This used to be an annual family event for me as I live right across the street. Family and friends are forced to park blocks behind our home and we have to bus them in. This is the only time of the entire year that the city has a problem with anyone parking on the curb across from the lake. Take it from someone who has seen it firsthand, celebrate somewhere else this year and save yourself the headache. I know I am.

Is there a certain number to call to report neighbors that are illegally popping fireworks? I've never called before but in order to protect my own property from fire, I won't hesitate to call this year

Maybe this will explain to some people in Bexar County as to the cost of fires not only on July 4. Copied from an online source: More than 70% of the Lone Star State is in exceptional drought, the highest classification of drought. Some 10,000 fires have scorched more than three million acres over the past six months, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage and costing the lives of TWO VOLUNTEER FIRE FIGHTERS. Who is going to help the Families of these fallen HERO'S, I very much doubt it will be the "people" (I could use other words but that will get me in trouble)who started the fires. More fires are reported on July 4 than on any other day in a typical year, and fireworks account for more than 70% the fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Fireworks caused an estimated 18,000 fires during 2009, the most recent year reported, leading to 30 civilian injuries and $38 million in property damage.

There will be fireworks on the lake tonight at Medina lake. All other fireworks in and around San Antonio, including the city, theme parks, and the military bases will not be having fireworks. The city will have its helicopters in the air on Monday to see and respond to any individuals shooting off fireworks anywhere in San Antonio city limits or in the unincorporated areas of Bexar county. Violators will be subjected to upwards of a $1000.00 fine.
