WASHINGTON (AP) - Those annoying prerecorded phone pitches known as robocalls aren't just getting on the nerves of millions of consumers: The government is fed up too, and it's turning to the public for help.

The Federal Trade Commission, which oversees the government's do not call list, has announced that it will offer a $50,000 cash prize to anyone who comes up with the best technical solution to block illegal commercial robocalls.

Last year, the FTC logged more than 2 million complaints from people who didn't want to be bothered by the automated calls, raising questions about the effectiveness of the do not call list.

The telemarketing industry says robocalls aren't the preferred method of reaching consumers. The calls are illegal unless a consumer has given a company written permission to make them.

How do you separate the good robocalls from the bad though? I own a small staffing agency and I send out job notifications using www.callmultiplier.com and I don't want to lose that ability...

I think the solotion is fairly ez .The U S Must require all legitimate businesses doing this to have a contact number that shows up on your caller id .This contact # must come back to a person in that company(not a computer )That way when and if you have to report them .who ever the deputy dog is going to be here has some thing to work with.also if the caller has a option for you to be taken out of there system it MUST be done in 24 hrs.NOT when ever they get around to it while still calling you 3 times a day .

Every time I get one of those calls, I hang up and call the law. I already call them out here at least once or twice every day because of awful things our neighbors do. If they have to keep coming out here even more, they will figure out something to do about it.

@satoday - Those calls are phishing scams (trying to get your credit card or personal info), and since they are attempting fraud to start with, they ignore the DNC list. "Legitimate" telemarketers are bad enough - I really want to see the government go get these scam/fraud/phishing crews...

Something called card member services calls my business cell, personal cell and home - "It is urgent that we speak to you - time is running out for us to reduce your credit card interest rate" The area codes are all over the country - if you wait to speak to someone they hang up on you. I have reported them so many times but they keep on calling.
