Celebrities often have to deal with the criticism that comes with living in the public eye, but one film critic is coming under fire for comments he made about actress Melissa McCarthy. She's best known for her role as sister-in-law, Megan, in "Bridesmaids."
Veteran film critic,
Rex Reed, reviewed McCarthy's newest comedy, "Identity Thief," due out this Friday. He describes McCarthy as "tractor-sized, obnoxious and a hippo." He also added: "She's a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success."
McCarthy told
Good Housekeeping last fall she sometimes wishes she were a size 6, but doesn't beat herself up over her weight. Meanwhile, Reed's critique has spawned plenty of upset readers slamming him for resorting to name calling and fat shaming.
DISCUSS: Should film critics also comment on actresses' appearances or just stick to the quality of the film?
