Celebrities often have to deal with the criticism that comes with living in the public eye, but one film critic is coming under fire for comments he made about actress Melissa McCarthy. She's best known for her role as sister-in-law, Megan, in "Bridesmaids."

Veteran film critic, Rex Reed, reviewed McCarthy's newest comedy, "Identity Thief," due out this Friday. He describes McCarthy as "tractor-sized, obnoxious and a hippo." He also added: "She's a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success."

McCarthy told Good Housekeeping last fall she sometimes wishes she were a size 6, but doesn't beat herself up over her weight. Meanwhile, Reed's critique has spawned plenty of upset readers slamming him for resorting to name calling and fat shaming.

DISCUSS: Should film critics also comment on actresses' appearances or just stick to the quality of the film?

Rex Reed is a dork and Melissa McCarthy is fat. Her size is a rather essential part of her comedic persona. It's her bread and butter, no pun intended. If she's OK with it then he needs to shut his prissy, antagonistic mouth.

Well to be fair. He's a movie critic. Not a nutritional critic. He should stick to the title and descrition of his work. Tabliods are the ones who critiSIZE actors and fatresses as individuls. If he wants to keep any credibility at all he would stay away from the personal comments.

She's not thick, she's not stout, she's not hefty, she's 'fat'. Enough of the PC. Get over it. Bing the Nat'l Prayer Bkft where famous Neuro-Surgeon(Ben Carson)speech mentioned that PC was muzzling society' speech(paraphrasing).etc And this was right in front of Obama presence, who seemed a bit 'annoyed'. Bing it, it is awesome.

Quit the muzzling of free speech, now. Thank goodness R.Reed spoke the truth. Liberals are OK when their own spew derogatory names of their opponents, but become enraged when they are faced with the same criticism. Liberalism a dangerous mental disorder gone amuck....eek

I hope he loses his job and is never allowed to work in the entertainment (or any other) industry again. With any luck he'll end up broke and homeless, like he deserves for making such hateful and insensitive remarks.
