SAN ANTONIO -- Police found two elderly women dead inside their home Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were called a home located at 205 E. Lambert after neighbors became concerned about the 82-year-old twin sisters and called 9-1-1.

The neighbors said they had not seen Emma and Florence Jernigan for several days and got worried after they saw the women's mail pile up and flies along the windows.

Firefighters and police forced their way inside the home and found the two women dead in the living room. Investigators said it appears they both died from heat stroke several days ago.

Neighbors told police the sisters did have an air conditioner and several fans that were donated to them, but they refused to use them because they were on a fixed income.

The women's bodies were taken to the medical examiners office.

Police do not believe the sisters have any relatives in the area.

Investigators called it a sad situation, and they are encouraging everyone to check on neighbors and loved ones, especially the elderly, during the extreme heat we have been experiencing.
