SAN ANTONIO -- Developers looking to make a positive change to a neighborhood is sparking controversy with people who live near downtown. The developers want to build a multistory apartment complex in the Tobin Hill Historic District, north of downtown. It would be located near the intersection of McCullough and Courtland Place.
"We are not against change," said Marty Kushner, a Tobin Hill resident. "If we did not have change, our neighborhood would not evolve into the amazing area it is right now."
Kushner says he doesn't want the city's planning commission to clear the way for change to the master plan for the historic district. That could give a developer the right to build an apartment complex, possibly four stories high.
"I totally agree with (Kushner)," said Angel Gonzalez, with GKW Incorporated. "It didn't fit within the block, because of the older homes and we want to match more with what's in the area."
In a five to four vote, the planning commission approved changes to the land use, moving the project forward. The zoning commission still has to approve the deal before construction begins. The developer told News 4 he'll continue to work with neighbors on the scale of the buildings.
