SAN ANTONIO - A Bexar County Sheriff's deputy who was shot while serving arrest warrants has been released from the hospital.
Deputy Jose Esquivel, who has been on the force for 28 years, was shot twice Tuesday evening. He was wearing a protective vest but suffered a fractured left arm and an injury to his right shoulder as a result of the shooting. A spokesperson for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Esquivel was released from University Hospital early Wednesday morning.
Five deputies were serving the warrants on 35-year-old Juan Daniel Gonzales Jr. at around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Gonzales was wanted for seven felonies, including five counts of theft, one count of retaliation and one count of violating the sex offender registration, authorities said.
Sheriff Susan Pamerleau said Gonzales was hiding in a laundry room inside the home on Dublin Place, near Shaenfield Road and Loop 1604. He was allegedly armed with a handgun.
"As our officer came around the corner, the suspect then fired upon the officer, hitting him twice. An assisting officer came around and fired at him, and they were able to subdue him and take him into custody," she explained.
A teenage girl said she was out running Tuesday evening when a young man outside the home warned her to take cover.
"The boy was saying, 'Get down! Get down!' I hid under a trash can. He said, 'what are you doing? Hide!'" she said.
The girl said she then heard about eight shots.
"I hid under the cop car and I was like, 'I pray, I hope he's okay.' He was telling me to get down and yelling and stuff," she said.
A male homeowner and a woman at the house were taken into custody for questioning.
Gonzales initially believed he was shot, but paramedics said he was okay, according to a spokesman. He was admitted to a secure area at University Hospital for further evaluation. He has been charged with attempted capital murder.
