SAN ANTONIO -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and you'll see pink all around the city. Even the Tower of the Americas was lit up in pink this month to show support. But not everyone is on board.
News 4 WOAI received a call from a concerned employee from one of the airlines. That person told us employees weren't allowed to put up any pink decorations in support of breast cancer awareness. The employee also said decorations that were up had to come down at the request of the airport. So, we called the airport for an explanation.
In a statement, Rich Johnson of the San Antonio International Airport said:
"In an effort to maintain a consistent look to the terminal facilities, especially the lobby area, we are trying to keep the look and feel consistent and uniform. There are hundreds of worthy causes worth promoting, but we need to maintain a certain consistency among tenants. the airlines and other tenants are free to wear clothing, pins, ribbons etc. expressing their support for various causes."
The airport did make employees take down the decorations, but does support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Employees then suggested representatives from each airline go shopping together for decorations so every ticket counter matched, but that was turned down, leaving some workers scratching their heads.
"The breast cancer walk here is one of the largest in the country, so how is that going to be offensive?" one worker told News 4 WOAI. "It's a cause that's very near and dear to a lot of our hearts."
